Criticism Arises Over Candidate’s Appeal to ‘Respect’ Trump’s Verdict
Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan faced backlash after calling for Americans to “respect” the guilty verdict in former President Donald Trump’s fraud case.
Hogan, who is a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, shared his message on X, stating: “Regardless of the outcome, I encourage all Americans to honor the verdict and the legal process.”
Amidst the current divided state of the country, Hogan emphasized the importance of leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to avoid adding to the divisive rhetoric. He stressed the need to uphold the rule of law, a cornerstone of the nation’s greatness.
Trump was convicted on 34 charges in the fraud case, making him the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges. He maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the verdict.
Chris LaCivita, a Trump advisor, criticized Hogan’s statement, suggesting it could negatively impact his campaign.
Hogan, known for his criticism of Trump, declared earlier this year that he would not support either Trump or President Biden in the 2024 election. He secured the Republican nomination in Maryland and will face off against Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County Executive, who emerged victorious in the Democratic primary.
