Cucumber Recall Affects 26 States Amid Salmonella Outbreak – One America News Network

Almost 70 individuals have reported illnesses, and 18 have been hospitalized due to a salmonella outbreak linked to whole fresh cucumbers distributed across 26 U.S. states and parts of Canada.

The states affected by the distribution of the contaminated cucumbers include: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, as announced by Sunfed.

“Evidence from epidemiological studies and traceback information indicates that cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico, including those recalled from SunFed Produce LLC, may be contaminated with salmonella, leading to these illnesses,” stated the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a news release on Friday.

In a recall notice released on Thursday and posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website, Sunfed Produce LLC revealed that the affected cucumbers were sold between October 12th and November 26th.

The cucumbers reported to have impacted 68 people were contained within bulk cardboard boxes labeled with the SunFed brand or were stored in generic white boxes or black plastic crates with a sticker identifying the grower.

“Upon discovering this issue, we took immediate action to safeguard consumers. We are collaborating closely with authorities and the involved ranch to ascertain the potential cause,” said Sunfed President Craig Slate in the recall announcement. “We insist that all our growers adhere strictly to FDA food safety standards.”

Furthermore, the contaminated cucumbers were also distributed in parts of Canada, specifically including Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.

The company urged consumers to verify whether their purchased cucumbers match those identified in the recall and to refrain from consuming or distributing any questionable produce.

Earlier this year, more than 500 individuals fell ill from salmonella, with 155 requiring hospitalization after consuming contaminated produce in south Florida.

Salmonella infections are estimated to affect approximately 1.35 million individuals in the U.S. annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Individuals infected with salmonella typically experience severe symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. The bacteria can lead to more severe and potentially fatal infections in vulnerable populations, including the elderly, infants, and those with compromised immune systems.
