DA Bragg and Colangelo will give testimony in front of House Judiciary Committee
Reports indicate that Democrat Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and lead prosecutor Matthew Colangelo will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on July 12. House Republicans plan to question Bragg and Colangelo, who previously worked in the Biden administration’s Department of Justice, about the criminal trial against Donald Trump.
The hearing is scheduled for the day after Trump’s sentencing by Judge Juan Merchan following his conviction on 34 counts related to falsifying business records. Trump claims innocence and alleges political persecution due to his status as the presumptive Republican candidate in the upcoming election.
Rep. Jim Jordan, the Judiciary Committee chair and a Trump supporter, sent a letter to Bragg on May 31 inviting him to testify. The hearing aims to examine politically motivated prosecutions of federal officials, specifically Trump’s case.
Bragg’s office indicated that his testimony would be postponed until after Trump’s sentencing, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rule of law. Colangelo, who joined Bragg’s team after leaving the DOJ, denied any coordination between the two offices regarding the prosecution.
The Department of Justice confirmed there was no communication between them and Bragg’s office in relation to the case. They emphasized that they do not oversee the work of the District Attorney’s office.
