DA Willis, Judge Overseeing Georgia’s Trump Election Case, Wins Primary Elections
Two key players in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump have won their respective elections on Tuesday.
Both Newsmax and AP have confirmed the victory of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.
Willis, who secured a racketeering indictment against Trump last year, defeated challenger Christian Wise Smith in the Democratic primary and will now face Republican Courtney Kramer in the fall. McAfee, who was randomly assigned to preside over the case, won a nonpartisan contest and will serve a full four-year term starting in January.
The high-profile nature of the election case has thrust both Willis and McAfee into the national spotlight, giving them more recognition than usual for their positions.
Willis, with strong name recognition and the benefits of incumbency, is favored to win the general election. Fulton County leans heavily Democratic, with about 73% of voters supporting President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Kramer, who has ties to Trump allies in Georgia, is challenging Willis due to the Trump indictment, aiming for change in the community.
McAfee, favored to win due to incumbency and bipartisan support, has been a prominent figure in Georgia since presiding over the election interference case.
Both Willis and Smith previously worked together under former District Attorney Paul Howard and ran against each other in the Democratic primary in 2020.
Willis’ campaign focuses on reducing case backlogs, combating gang violence, and youth intervention. However, her relationship with a special prosecutor in the election case led to conflict of interest claims.
McAfee ruled that Willis could continue the case if the special prosecutor stepped aside, which he did. However, an appeal is pending regarding the ruling.
Both Willis and McAfee have garnered significant attention due to their involvement in the election interference case, with strong campaign support.
