According to reports, Chris Louis, 24, took his three kids from their apartment to a McDonald’s in Augusta just before 4:30 p.m. on March 22nd.
The Augusta Press indicated that the children, aged 1, 6, and 10, were in the play area connected to the restaurant’s dining section.
The publication mentioned that a concerned diner alerted the authorities after noticing Louis leaving the establishment, only to return briefly to check on his children before exiting again.
Deputies from Richmond County arrived at the scene and stayed with the unattended minors until their father came back.
Lous was seen returning to the McDonald’s shortly before 6:20 p.m., where police questioned him regarding his decision to leave his children alone.
Louis, who does not possess a vehicle, explained to officers that he left his children behind to avoid having them walk back home while he attended the interview, as reported.
The police remained with Louis until the children’s mother arrived to pick them up.
Louis was subsequently arrested and charged with neglecting a minor.
Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown learned of Louis’ situation and initiated a GoFundMe campaign on his behalf.
“The story really caught me off guard. A dad trying to earn a living for his family. I understand he shouldn’t have left his kids, but some people simply cannot afford babysitting or other options,” Brown stated on GoFundMe.
“Chris was pursuing happiness, and sometimes people just need assistance,” Brown posted on X.
Alongside setting up the GoFundMe, Brown generously donated $1,000 and pledged that the funds would be directed to Louis.
