Penny has been appointed as a deal partner on the American Dynamism team of Andreessen Horowitz in Manhattan.
This role is intended to guide the firm’s investment decisions in the areas of government and defense technology, as outlined on the company’s website.
On Tuesday, the company circulated an internal memo commending Penny for his “bravery” throughout his trial.
“I believe, as I know many of you do, that Daniel showed bravery in a difficult circumstance,” wrote David Ulevitch, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, in the internal statement acquired by The Free Press.
“He has been acquitted of all charges. Moreover, it’s always been our practice to assess the whole individual and not to judge them by the worst moment of their lives.”
Penny’s new role comes after he was exonerated on December 9th by a Manhattan jury, who found him not guilty of criminally negligent homicide.
The Marine veteran was recorded applying a chokehold to Neely for several minutes after the homeless man posed threats to passengers on May 1, 2023, aboard an uptown F train in Manhattan.
Prior to the incident, Neely had faced 40 previous arrests and struggled with mental health issues.
“He will gain insights into the investment business and contribute to supporting our portfolio,” Ulevitch noted.
“We have faith in Daniel and are thrilled to welcome him to our team.”
Vice President JD Vance shared on X that Penny’s new employment was “Incredible news.” Vance, along with then-President-elect Donald Trump, invited Penny to the annual Army-Navy college football game in December, merely five days post-acquittal.
The American Dynamism group at the firm champions startups that tackle essential infrastructure, public safety, and national security issues.
