DC Area Experiences Strong Storms, Resulting in Flight Cancellations and Power Outages

Severe storms, including tornadoes, hail, and lightning, have caused thousands of flight cancellations and delays across the United States. The storms, which prompted tornado watches and warnings across 10 states, have primarily impacted the Washington-Baltimore region. The National Weather Service has warned of the potential for damaging hurricane-force winds, large hail, and strong tornadoes. As a result, more than 1,300 flights have been canceled and 5,500 delayed. The Federal Aviation Administration is rerouting planes around the storms and preparing to pause flights in major cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Charlotte, and Atlanta. The White House has adjusted President Joe Biden’s departure time for a four-day trip and canceled a cybersecurity event featuring the first lady and top officials. Federal offices closed early, and residents were advised to seek shelter at home or work. Power outages have been reported in Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, and Virginia, affecting over 580,000 customers. The storm’s impact is expected to be significant, and repair efforts may take several days.
