New York City Mayor Eric Adams has reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with President-elect Donald Trump to identify and deport criminal migrants.

In the past year, the Democratic mayor has experienced a subtle rift with his party due to criticism of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding the ongoing border issues, asserting that the situation could ultimately “destroy New York City” if not addressed.
“I’ve communicated clearly that I won’t be at odds with this administration. Instead, I’m committed to working alongside them,” Adams declared on Tuesday.
Adams expressed interest in meeting with Trump’s designated border czar, Tom Homan, to deliberate on strategies for deporting undocumented residents in New York City.
“We cannot overlook the fact that the American populace has expressed loudly and clearly that they recognize a broken system and demand reform,” Adams added.
He also cited instances of migrant criminals, including 19-year-old Venezuelan immigrant Bernardo Castro Mata, who allegedly shot two NYPD officers, to underscore his arguments.
“Here’s a guy on camera shooting at a police officer. I don’t want that individual in my city, it’s as simple as that. You have someone who rapes a young woman, gets released, and then commits rape again. I don’t want such individuals here,” Adams asserted. “Those who engage in crimes such as robbery, shooting at officers, or raping innocent people pose a threat to our nation.”
Adams’ remarks contrast sharply with other Democratic mayors, such as Mike Johnston of Denver and Boston’s Michelle Wu, who have defiantly pledged to oppose Trump’s mass deportation initiatives.
“Cancel me! Because I am going to safeguard the residents of this city, and if anyone believes they can come into this country and harm innocent New Yorkers or migrants seeking asylum, this is not the mayor you want to deal with,” Adams emphasized, drawing a clear boundary against the left.
Furthermore, Adams addressed the significant financial impact of the migrant crisis on New York City taxpayers, indicating that the $6.4 billion allocated for migrants could have been directed toward beneficial social programs for taxpaying New Yorkers, including hiring additional guidance counselors, police officers, or social workers in schools.
“I firmly believe in my ability to collaborate with those across the aisle who hold differing viewpoints,” Adams remarked. “I believe I have ideas that could address this challenge and align with what the American public has been asking of us: secure our borders, deal with individuals committing violent acts, and ensure the safety of our citizens.”
This past weekend, during a podcast, Mayor Adams also came to the defense of 26-year-old former Marine Daniel Penny, who was arrested after attempting to protect bystanders from the threats posed by “homeless drug user” Jordan Neely, a Michael Jackson impersonator, in a New York City subway. A jury is presently deliberating Penny’s case concerning the “deadly chokehold” he used on Neely. Neely had a history of criminal charges and had been arrested multiple times for various offenses, including an incident in 2021 where he punched a 67-year-old woman in the face.
On Saturday, Adams appeared on the “Rob Astorino Show” to support Penny, discussing the trial that has garnered extensive media attention since the former Marine was charged following Neely’s death aboard the F train in Manhattan in May 2023.
“Those passengers were fearful. I’ve experienced the subway system. As a police officer, I understand the complexities of confronting someone,” Adams stated during the interview. “It’s essential that we consider the entirety of this situation… We were on the subway hearing someone [Neely] threaten to harm and kill others… Here’s someone [Penny] on that subway responding appropriately in a situation where we should have had a mental health facility available,” the mayor concluded.
