In a move aimed at eliminating “weak leadership” and inaction within the Pentagon, the Trump administration has removed a high-ranking NATO official, as suggested by a conservative research organization.

Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield was reportedly dismissed from NATO’s military committee over the weekend. She previously made history as the first woman to lead the Naval War College, a role she held until 2023.

Chatfield has a notable background, having led a joint reconstruction team in Afghanistan and served as a Navy helicopter pilot, making her one of the 32 members of NATO’s military committee.

On Tuesday, Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “removed U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield from her role as U.S. representative to NATO’s military committee, due to a loss of confidence in her leadership abilities,” according to an official statement.

As reported by the Associated Press, Chatfield received a call from Adm. Christopher Grady, the acting chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who informed her that the administration planned to pursue a different direction in this position.

Moreover, a previous letter to Hegseth from the conservative group American Accountability Foundation (AAF) identified 20 officers and admirals whom they claimed were too focused on DEI and other progressive initiatives.

Chatfield was among eight women on this list, which argued that focusing on such initiatives could compromise national security. Included in the context for her inclusion were her remarks from a 2015 speech where she noted that 80% of House members were male, while asserting that “our diversity is our strength.”

The AAF further mentioned a slide from a presentation by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute that highlighted the idea: “Investing in gender equality and women’s empowerment can unlock human potential on a transformational scale.”

Both Hegseth and President Trump have expressed strong views that “woke” policies are not relevant in the current administration.

NATO states that the committee serves as the primary source of military guidance for the Nuclear Planning Group and the North Atlantic Council, acting as a link between NATO’s military structure and its political decision-makers.
