Democratic-controlled Senate Expected to Block Impeachment of Mayorkas

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is expected to pass the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Democrat-majority Senate on Tuesday, where a swift end is anticipated.

It has been over two months since the House impeached Mayorkas by a narrow margin, accusing him of failing to enforce border laws and lying to Congress during a surge in illegal immigration.

Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer is expected to quickly halt the impeachment proceedings, arguing that it is a politically motivated misuse of the impeachment process. Republican lawmakers are likely to protest his decision.

Some lawmakers believe that impeaching Mayorkas is a waste of time, especially as Congress faces other pressing global issues such as the Israel-Gaza conflict and Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Despite the accusations, Mayorkas denies any wrongdoing, with President Biden backing him. Some Republicans also believe that there is insufficient evidence to support the House’s claims.

While Republicans criticize Mayorkas for creating a border “crisis” that threatens national security, the House has been slow to deliver the impeachment papers to the Senate.

Former President Donald Trump, a key figure in immigration issues, recently proposed legislation linking border conditions to his false claims of election fraud.

In a speech on Monday, Schumer emphasized that impeachment should not be used to settle policy disputes, cautioning that it would set a dangerous precedent for Congress.

Schumer also promised to handle the issue swiftly in the Senate, despite resistance from some Republicans who want a full trial.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas expressed alarm over talks of dismissing the case without a trial, vowing that Republicans will use all available tools to push for a complete trial.

Mayorkas is only the second presidential Cabinet official to face impeachment in history, with the last instance occurring in 1876.
