In a segment on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Newsom (D-Calif.) stated, “the Democratic brand is toxic right now,” referencing the party’s low approval ratings.
“It’s one thing to make noise, but you also have to make sense,” Newsom remarked.
The governor acknowledged his love for the party but expressed concern that “we’ve lost our way” and emphasized that he is listening to the concerns.
“I believe that through this podcast, and the chance to converse with those I disagree with, we can seek common ground and avoid cheap shots,” he added.
During the interview on Friday, Newsom attributed the Democrats’ reliance on “cancel culture” and personal attacks as contributing factors to its dwindling support.
“I think it’s crucial for Democrats to recognize that we can be overly judgmental,” he stated.
“Democrats need to take responsibility for that,” he emphasized. “They need to grow up.”
A recent NBC poll indicated that only 27% of respondents had a positive view of the Democratic Party.
Another poll from CNN found that 54% of those surveyed held a negative perception of the party, while just 29% had a favorable opinion.
