Democrats are outraged over the White House’s endorsement of weapons sales to Israel.

More than a dozen Democrat lawmakers are pressuring the Biden administration to explain two sales of arms to Israel without congressional approval.

Politico reported that 19 Democrats, in a terse letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and posted by Politico, called the unilateral approval “highly unusual.”

The request for “more information” also revealed a divide among Democrats, with progressives especially critical of President Joe Biden’s response to Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war, Politico noted.

In their letter, the Democrat lawmakers said they wanted answers as to why the emergency sales were needed — and sidestepped the typical process requiring congressional approval — and if any measures were taken to mitigate civilian harm.

“It is essential for Congress to be able to conduct oversight of these arms transfers and determine whether they are consistent with humanitarian principles and U.S. law, and whether they advance or harm U.S. national security,” the lawmakers wrote, led by progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

“We appreciate that your administration has repeatedly urged the Israeli government to take additional steps to reduce civilian casualties. However, we are concerned that these transfers and the administration’s evasion of congressional oversight may be inconsistent with broader U.S. foreign policy goals.”

It’s not the first time the Biden administration has faced pushback from its own party over Israel’s conduct in the Gaza amid the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians, Politico reported.

But blowback was immediate after Biden left Congress out of the loop on the two arms sales to Israel that snubbed the usual sign-off by leaders and ranking members of the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs committees.

According to Politico, the State Department in December used an emergency designation to approve the sale of 14,000 tank shells to Israel worth $106 million. That same month, it used the same process to approve a sale of primers, fuzes, and charges for Israel’s 155mm artillery shells previously sold by the U.S., costing $147 million.

State Department officials had defended the expedited sales, noting they’ve used the same process to speed up weapons transfers to Ukraine.

Democrat lawmakers also want Blinken to answer if the U.S. has done any vetting of Israel under the Leahy Law, which bars U.S. assistance to foreign militaries that commit gross human-rights violations.

“Use of a national emergency waiver does not exempt the U.S. government from assessing whether arms sales are consistent with these policies,” the lawmakers said.

Oversight of arms transfers will likely vex lawmakers again when the Senate considers a $111 billion emergency aid package for Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel, Politico reported. Democrats, led by Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, want the reversal of a Biden administration plan to let officials waive congressional notification requirements for some military aid to Israel, the outlet reported.
