Democrats to use abortion as a political tool to help Biden secure Florida’s vote

Democrats are focusing on the issue of abortion in their efforts to help Biden win in Florida, a state that has leaned Republican in recent years. Former President Donald Trump won Florida by 3.36 points in 2020.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been campaigning in the state, with a particular emphasis on abortion. The campaign also opened a field office in Hillsborough County in April, a county that Biden won by 7 points in 2020.

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law restricting abortions at six weeks, and a law enshrining the right to an abortion in the state constitution will be on the ballot this fall.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez wrote in a campaign memo that “President Biden is in a stronger position to win Florida this cycle than he was in 2020,” according to a report by The Washington Times. The memo cites Trump’s weakened campaign and vulnerabilities within his coalition as possible advantages for Biden in Florida.

A poll by Florida Atlantic University-Mainstreet Research showed that only 13% of Floridians consider abortion to be the most important issue in this election.

Democrats in Florida have faced challenges in statewide elections, with only one Democrat winning statewide since 2012. Florida Democratic Party is now led by former Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried.

Republicans currently have an 892,034 advantage over Democrats in voter registration, according to Examiner.

Despite these challenges, winning Florida remains a difficult task for the Biden campaign. Recent polls have shown Trump leading in the state, with a CBS-News YouGov poll reporting a 54%-45% lead for Trump. Polls in April also indicated a lead for Trump by 8 points and 13 points, respectively.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who is running for a second term, is also reported to have a comfortable lead in recent polling.
