Dershowitz Accuses Trump Prosecutors of Deceiving Jury in Newsmax Interview
According to Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, the prosecutors in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan gave misleading closing arguments to the jury, as reported by Newsmax on Wednesday.
Trump is facing charges of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment to Michael Cohen, his former attorney, to reimburse him for his payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump has strongly denied the allegations, stating that the reported sexual encounter never took place.
Dershowitz pointed out that the prosecutors claimed the jury could find all the elements of a crime even without believing their star witness, Michael Cohen. However, Dershowitz argued that the key evidence linking Trump to the alleged crime was an uncorroborated conversation with Cohen that could have been confirmed by Alan Weisselberg, who was not called as a witness by the prosecution.
Dershowitz also criticized a New York State law that allows the prosecution to present closing arguments last, calling it unconstitutional. He argued that this practice prevented the defense from adequately responding to the charges. He suggested that the defense should have focused on the lack of witness testimony from Weisselberg in their closing arguments.
