Dershowitz Tells Newsmax that Trump Should Be Allowed to Exit the Courtroom

According to Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, former President Donald Trump should have the freedom to leave the courtroom whenever he wants, in response to a judge’s ruling that he must stay present for his trial. Dershowitz shared his views with Newsmax on Tuesday.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan recently stated that Trump would not be allowed to attend his son Barron’s high school graduation on May 17. Dershowitz criticized this decision, stating that Merchan was being particularly harsh on Trump.

“I’ve never heard of a judge who didn’t allow a defendant to attend their son’s graduation,” Dershowitz remarked.

Dershowitz emphasized that a defendant has the right to be present during the trial, but the judge can permit them to leave the courtroom if necessary.

“There is no valid reason for the prosecution to object to this, unless they are trying to interfere with the election,” Dershowitz commented on “Newsline.”

The case against Trump involves allegations that he directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make hush payments to adult entertainer Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal. Trump has denied the affairs but has been accused by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of falsifying business records to cover up the payments.

Dershowitz also raised concerns about the questioning of potential jurors in the case.

“We should gather the facts and judge for ourselves whether they can be fair, instead of letting the prospective jurors make that judgment,” he stated.
