Dershowitz tells Newsmax that Trump’s bond reduction is a major triumph.

Last week’s ruling reducing the bond amount for former President Donald Trump from $454 million to $175 million was considered a significant victory by Alan Dershowitz, a professor emeritus at Harvard Law School. Dershowitz stated on Newsmax Sunday that this decision is important because it indicates that the court will likely lower his fines as well.

Dershowitz explained, “They had to reduce the fine because it’s unconstitutional. The Eighth Amendment prohibits excessive fines. This fine is excessive by every possible standard. There were no damages or harm caused.”

He also predicted that the appellate court will further reduce the fines and send a message indicating that the bond amount will better reflect the eventual judgment in the case.

Following the reduction of the bond, New York Attorney General Letitia James released a statement affirming that Trump still faces accountability for his alleged fraud. However, Dershowitz pointed out that James had campaigned on a promise to target Trump, questioning the ethical implications of such actions.

Dershowitz also expressed his belief that the Supreme Court may ultimately have to rule on some of the Trump cases, including the Manhattan case involving Alvin Bragg and the hush payments, which he described as weak.

In the Georgia case against Trump, Dershowitz mentioned testimony from prosecutors that he believes warrants further investigation for possible perjury and obstruction of justice charges. He emphasized the importance of upholding the distinction between political speech and criminal behavior in such cases.
