Dershowitz Tells Newsmax: Trump Will Not Receive a Fair Trial

According to Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz in an interview with Newsmax on Sunday, former President Donald Trump may not have a fair trial in Manhattan due to the jury selection. Dershowitz expressed his lack of optimism about the trial’s outcome for Trump.

Dershowitz explained that the jury, although the best that could be selected from Manhattan’s anti-Trump voters, is not favorable for the former president. He suggested that for a fair trial, the proceedings should be relocated to areas like Rockland County or Staten Island. In his opinion, the current group in Manhattan does not provide a neutral setting for the trial.

The professor criticized the jury for potentially being biased, stating they rely on news sources like The New York Times and CNN, and may not offer a fair trial for Trump. He also noted that the allegations against Trump, involving his business records and hush money payments, do not constitute a crime.

Moreover, Dershowitz criticized Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order on Trump as unconstitutional and argued against the requirement for Trump to attend court daily, even missing important family events like his son’s graduation.

Looking ahead to the trial’s opening statements on Monday, Dershowitz anticipated a simple prosecution argument focused on Trump’s failure to disclose hush money, rather than the protection of his family and businesses.

Addressing a recent call to remove Trump’s Secret Service protection if he is jailed, Dershowitz deemed the suggestion “ridiculous” and emphasized the need for his security. He warned against unjust charges leading to Trump’s incarceration, pointing out the danger it would pose and the potential backlash it could generate.
