DeSantis Advises Exercise of Caution Regarding ‘Woke’ AI
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination, has expressed concerns about “woke” artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a campaign appearance in Iowa, DeSantis said that some AI companies have data that is “woke” and driven by a political agenda. He believes that there is a significant amount of power in AI, and warns against a society where computers overtake humanity.
DeSantis has been vocal about his opposition to “wokeness” in various contexts. He has criticized the Biden administration for its culture-conscious approach to the military, which he believes has led to low morale and poor recruitment. In a recent campaign speech in South Carolina, he unveiled his “Mission First” proposal for the Pentagon, expressing concerns about the military’s use of drag queens for recruitment and what he sees as social experimentation at the expense of readiness and lethality.
Furthermore, DeSantis highlighted China’s efforts to utilize AI for its military and emphasized the need for the United States to compete on the military side with AI. However, he is cautious about the implications of AI and called for appropriate guardrails to prevent computers from overtaking humanity.
As a presidential candidate, DeSantis’s remarks on AI and woke culture reflect his focus on addressing what he sees as ideological issues in various sectors, including technology and the military.
