Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has announced plans for a special legislative session to discuss the implementation of President-elect Trump’s anti-illegal immigration policies during the first 100 days of his administration, highlighting the need to enforce the law following the previous administration’s lax approach to illegal immigration.

“I will be calling the Legislature into a special session starting the week of Jan. 27,” DeSantis stated during a press conference on Monday. “With the next president being sworn in on Jan. 20, we expect immediate executive orders post-inaugural.”
“We’ll need a moment to assess and ensure our response is appropriate, but action must follow swiftly,” the governor added.
Additionally, DeSantis pointed out that he holds the authority to dismiss officials who intentionally fail to fulfill their responsibilities.
“State and local leaders in Florida must assist the Trump administration in enforcing our immigration laws,” the governor asserted. “To achieve this effectively, we will require legislation to assign extra responsibilities to local officials and provide them with necessary funding. It’s also essential to have measures for accountability regarding breaches of our anti-sanctuary policies, ensuring that no incentives remain for illegal immigration into our state.”
He emphasized that for state and local authorities, including sheriffs, to engage in enforcement activities, he expects to secure funding for them. The upcoming special session may also offer a preview of the collaboration between the governor and the president over the coming two years.
On his first day in office, Trump is expected to sign several executive orders. Last month, Stephen Miller, the president-elect’s deputy chief of staff, stated that one executive order could effectively “seal the border.”
