Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, is scheduled to visit Central America this week, including a stop at El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, which houses several members of the Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang recently deported from the U.S.

In addition to her visit to El Salvador, Noem is anticipated to travel to Colombia for discussions with President Gustavo Petro, the first leftist to govern the nation, as well as to Mexico to meet President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Noem’s journey “highlights the significance of our partner nations assisting in the removal of violent criminal illegal immigrants from the U.S.,” stated Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at DHS.
Noem’s trip follows the recent deportation of 261 illegal immigrants from the U.S. to El Salvador on March 15th, 238 of whom were affiliated with the violent Tren de Aragua gang. The president of El Salvador shared a message regarding the deportations on X.
“President Trump and Secretary Noem convey a direct message to criminal aliens contemplating illegal entries into America: Don’t even consider it,” McLaughlin added. “If you enter our nation and violate our laws, we will pursue you and imprison you.”
Noem’s expedition in Central America aligns with President Trump’s persistent drive to tackle illegal immigration while enabling widespread deportations, following his designation of Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization.
Recent footage depicted Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gang members being taken to the Terrorism Confinement Center, a significant high-security prison designed for the most dangerous and unpredictable offenders.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, allied with Trump, consented to housing the gang members for a fee, stating that the deportation flights would aid Salvadoran authorities in “finalizing intelligence collection and pursuing the remaining elements of MS-13, including former and current members, as well as money, weapons, drugs, hideouts, collaborators, and sponsors.”
“As always, we continue to progress in our battle against organized crime,” Bukele remarked. “However, this time, we’re also aiding our allies, ensuring our prison system is self-sustaining, and acquiring crucial intelligence to enhance the safety of our country. All through a single initiative. God bless El Salvador, and God bless the United States.”
Noem’s upcoming trip to Colombia will focus on a meeting with President Petro and the Colombian National Police’s specialized unit aimed at counteracting organized crime.
