Dick Morris tells Newsmax that Haley receives ‘no recognition for coming in second’

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has surged ahead of Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis in the presidential campaign, according to presidential campaign adviser Dick Morris in an interview with Newsmax. Morris emphasized that “there’s no prize for second place.”

In Morris’ view, Haley’s break from former President Donald Trump likely precludes her from being a vice presidential candidate despite her polling surge in the anti-Trump vote. Morris also noted that the Republican establishment forces, like former House Speaker Paul Ryan, are trying to work against Trump. However, this GOP primary cycle is showing the establishment to be on the wrong side of GOP voters, particularly when it comes Social Security and entitlements, Morris told host Rita Cosby.

He also criticized Haley for coming out in favor of raising the retirement age on Social Security and cutting back cost-of-living benefits, similar to the positions embraced by former House Speaker Ryan and DeSantis. According to Morris, this has hurt both Haley and DeSantis in the polling.

One New Hampshire poll has Haley surging to second and DeSantis falling to fifth – behind Trump, Haley, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Noting the importance of early caucus/primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, Morris emphasized that the larger battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are key to the 2024 presidential election.

According to Morris, popular vote and national general election polls are not necessarily indicative of winning the Electoral College and the presidential election. He advised focusing on state-by-state polling, emphasizing that Trump has led in most swing states. Morris pointed out that if there is a 50-50 vote in the popular vote, Trump still wins by a little bit in the Electoral College.
