Leftist commentator and podcast host Bill Maher quickly reacted to actor and producer Larry David’s satirical essay likening his White House dinner with President Donald Trump to a meal with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Maher stated that such a comparison is offensive to the Holocaust’s “six million dead Jews” and lacks sensitivity.

In his New York Times article titled “Larry David: My Dinner With Adolf,”, the creator of “Seinfeld” provided a “satirical” critique of Bill Maher’s recent dinner with Trump, drawing controversial parallels between the two figures and challenging Maher’s depiction of the meeting.

“Here I was, ready to meet Hitler, the one I’d seen and heard—the public Hitler. But this private Hitler was entirely different. Oddly enough, this one felt more genuine, as if this was the real Hitler. The entire experience was bewildering,” David wrote, alluding to Maher’s dinner with Trump without mentioning them directly.

“To invoke the Hitler comparison—first of all, it’s disrespectful to the six million Jews who perished,” Maher remarked. “That ought to stand on its own.”

“Starting your argument with the Hitler reference is a losing proposition. Look, it may not be entirely logically defensible, but Hitler has to remain in his own category. He’s the GOAT of evil. We just have to acknowledge that,” Maher added.

“The moment you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve forfeited the argument,” Maher continued. “Come on. Nobody has been tougher, and more insightful, about Donald Trump than I have. I don’t need a lecture on who Donald Trump is. Just because I dined with him doesn’t change that, and reporting honestly isn’t a crime either.”

After dining with Trump, Maher characterized the GOP president as “one of the most effective politicians,” downplaying several negative perceptions held by Democrats. He even described Trump as “gracious and measured.”

While Maher has criticized Trump, he accepted the invitation from Trump ally Kid Rock, who also attended the dinner. Maher admitted he wanted to engage because “it was framed as a step towards healing America.”

Maher expressed that although he is not aligned with MAGA Republicans, he acknowledges that “the left’s wokeness” has negatively impacted America and the world.

“I don’t claim to have the answers to heal America, but I connect with Trump’s supporters because I’m candid about the woke delusion,” he explained.

Moreover, Maher stated that during dinner, they discussed immigration and foreign policy, expressing astonishment at Trump’s demeanor in private, noting he is “not the same person who was tweeting nasty remarks about me the night prior.”

David’s article seemed to take aim at Maher for complimenting Trump’s warmth and hospitality, prompting many liberals to criticize him for “normalizing” Trump.

“Congrats, @billmaher. You got played by Trump. Easy target,” commented liberal analyst Wajahat Ali.

However, Maher remarked that he doesn’t intend to make his disagreement with David “a personal feud… [as] we might reconcile in the future.”

“I can handle critique, and I can also tolerate when others disagree with me. That’s not how I would have approached it. Once again, the irony: my original point remains. There has to be a better way than slinging insults without dialogue. If I can converse with Trump, I can certainly communicate with Larry David too.”
