DOJ Alleges Trump Committed Crimes Unlike Predecessors

Michael Dreeben, an attorney representing Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith, informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that Donald Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges, highlighting that his predecessors did not commit any crimes.

This week, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments with significant legal and political implications, particularly on whether Trump is immune from prosecution in a federal case accusing him of attempting to undermine the 2020 election results.

In response to Justice Clarence Thomas’s inquiry about why other presidents have not faced prosecutions, Dreeben explained, “The reason why there have not been prior criminal prosecutions is that there were not crimes.”

Trump’s case marks a historic moment as the first time a former president has faced criminal charges and the Supreme Court’s first involvement in such a matter.
