DOJ Withholds Criminal Referral on Fauci’s Alleged ‘Lie,’ Claims Sen. Rand Paul

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of lying to Congress about gain-of-function research related to COVID-19. Paul shared evidence of Fauci’s alleged lie in the form of an email sent by Fauci to Health and Human Services staff on February 1, 2020. The email, quoted by Paul, mentions “suspicions” held by credible scientists about the virus’s mutations and the involvement of scientists in the Wuhan University in gain-of-function experiments. Paul claims that Fauci’s email directly contradicts his statements during a committee hearing where he denied funding any gain-of-function research. Paul sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department in 2021, but there is no information on what action the department might have taken. In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Fauci argued that there is a need for better understanding of what qualifies as gain-of-function research and that shutting down all such research would prevent the development of vaccines. Paul has criticized Fauci’s explanations, calling them “word salad guidance.” He alleges that the National Institutes of Health altered the definition of gain-of-function research to cover up Fauci’s alleged lie.
