Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister, describes current situation as the ‘Most Critical Since WWII’

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has reignited discussions about World War III, placing Europe in a “pre-war” phase, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cautioned on Friday.

“We are currently facing the most critical moment since the end of World War II,” Tusk told the BBC, urging for military support for Ukraine and emphasizing the crucial nature of the next two years.

“It may seem alarming, especially to the younger generation, but we must prepare ourselves mentally for the start of a new era: The pre-war era.”

War is no longer just a historical concept,” remarked the former European Council president. “It is a harsh reality that began over two years ago.”

While Vladimir Putin denies any intentions of attacking NATO, labeling it as “absolute nonsense,” the increased air strikes and drone attacks, particularly in Kyiv, have led Tusk to believe that Putin is trying to justify the escalating violence against civilians in Ukraine.

The recent attacks have been described as “missile terror” by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who warned that without additional aid, Ukrainian forces may have to retreat against Russian forces in the south and east.

Tusk highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Europe’s security against Russia, stating that “literally any scenario is possible.”

Tusk also echoed a sentiment similar to that of Donald Trump regarding European defense and NATO in his interview with BBC, emphasizing the need for Europe to invest more in its defense if it expects support from the U.S.

Unlike many other European NATO members, Poland allocates 4% of its GDP towards defense, surpassing the 2% minimum advocated by Trump, according to Tusk.
