The Senate has granted confirmation to GOP Representative Doug Collins as the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Collins received confirmation on Tuesday with a vote tally of 77-to-23 — marking one of the broadest bipartisan approvals for any Trump Cabinet nominee to date.
He represented his constituents in Congress from 2013 through 2021.
Last month, he advanced through the Veterans’ Affairs Committee with strong bipartisan support, only one dissenting vote from Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii).
In his acceptance speech last November, Collins committed to “combatting bureaucratic red tape at the VA, eliminating corruption, and ensuring that every veteran gets the benefits they have rightfully earned.”
He now assumes leadership of an agency that has faced challenges including prior budget reductions, exorbitant pay for unqualified officials, and widespread veteran dissatisfaction regarding long wait times for care during the Biden administration.
This will be Collins’ first experience overseeing a large federal agency, which employs approximately 400,000 individuals and operates 1,300 healthcare facilities.
“I’m aware that this is not an easy task. I feel drawn to take on this significant responsibility,” Collins stated. “When a veteran has to go through a congressman or senator’s office to obtain the care they deserve, it signals a failure.”
“My priority is to look after the veterans. We won’t be cutting budgets at the expense of veterans’ benefits,” he added.
