E. Carolina University Poll Shows Trump Leading Biden by 5 Points in North Carolina

Former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in North Carolina by 5 percentage points, as per a recent poll released by East Carolina University.

The poll, conducted among 1,332 registered voters from May 31 to June 3, shows Trump leading Biden with 48% to 43% support. Only 4% remain undecided, while 3% plan to support alternative candidates. The margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.

Last Thursday, Trump became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes. A New York jury found him guilty on 34 charges related to covering up a payment made by his lawyer to Stormy Daniels.

Despite the verdict, Trump plans to appeal and return to the campaign trail, facing the challenge of being labeled a convicted felon.

Key findings from the poll include:

  • 42% of respondents believe inflation and the cost of living are the top concerns in the state, followed by the economy, new abortion laws, border security, public safety, healthcare affordability, and environmental issues.
  • 32% are more likely to vote for Trump due to the verdict, while 29% are less likely. 37% say it will not affect their vote.
  • 37% have a lot of confidence in the accuracy of the 2024 election results, while 34% have some confidence and 23% have no confidence.

“Republicans have historically won presidential elections in North Carolina, making Trump the favorite for 2024,” said Dr. Peter Francia, Director of the ECU Center for Survey Research. “The race for governor, however, remains uncertain.”
