The poll, released on Wednesday, revealed that 44% of registered voters in Arizona prefer Gallego, while 40% favor Lake, with 16% remaining undecided in the race to fill Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s seat as she retires. When undecided voters were asked to choose a candidate, Gallego received 51% support compared to Lake’s 49%, falling within the poll’s margin of error range of 3 points.
“With Sinema not participating, independent voters are leaning towards Gallego by 42% to 38%,” noted Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling. “Voters under 40 prefer Gallego at 44% to 30%, while those in the 40 to 59 age group favor Lake. The 60+ age group is split with 47% for Gallego and 46% for Lake, while voters over 70 support Gallego by 50% to 45%.”
When it comes to important issues, 32% of survey respondents identified immigration as the top concern, followed by the economy at 22%, and housing affordability at 11%. Education, healthcare, abortion access, threats to democracy, and crime all ranked lower than 10%.
Voters who prioritize immigration overwhelmingly support Lake at 77%, while those focused on the economy favor Gallego with 43% to Lake’s 38%.
The same poll also indicated that former President Donald Trump is currently ahead of President Joe Biden in Arizona by 48% to 44%, with 8% undecided or supporting another candidate.
In a previous Emerson poll conducted in February before Sinema’s retirement announcement, Gallego had a 6-point lead on Lake in a hypothetical three-way race. In a head-to-head matchup, Gallego led Lake by 7 points among registered voters.
The survey was conducted from March 12-15 and included 1,000 registered voters in Arizona, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
