Ex-Manhattan DA: Trump Probably Won’t Face Jail Time
Former Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., a Democrat who retired in 2022, expressed doubts over former President Donald Trump facing jail time after being convicted for falsifying business records.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Vance was asked if he would recommend sending Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, to jail if he were still the DA.
Vance replied, “I’m not going to answer that question because that’s for Mr. Bragg to decide. If you ask me if I think jail time will be imposed in this case, I think not. Ultimately, that decision lies with Judge Juan Merchan.”
Vance speculated that given the proximity of key events like the Republican convention and the election, he would be surprised if Trump were sentenced to imprisonment immediately. However, he acknowledged that sentencing could be adjourned until after the election.
Regarding Trump’s plan to appeal the case, Vance noted that strong appeals are expected, and there are issues that will be reviewed by the appellate courts.
The trial resulted in Trump becoming the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes, specifically for falsifying business records in relation to payments made to an adult film actor during the 2016 election. He was found guilty on all 34 counts.
Vance mentioned that during his tenure, investigations into Trump focused on financial crimes, leading to convictions. He also expressed confidence in Judge Merchan’s handling of the trial, praising his impartiality and fairness.
