Fahrenkopf of CPD Raises Concerns to Newsmax about Biden-Trump Debates

With President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump deviating from the usual path of presidential debates during an election season, there are still many questions surrounding how they will be managed, as Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr. told Newsmax on Wednesday.

Fahrenkopf serves as the co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, a nonprofit, independent group that has sponsored every presidential debate since 1988 as mandated by federal law.

Trump, the presumed Republican nominee, challenged Biden to debate him “anytime, anywhere.” In response, Biden’s campaign proposed two debates on June 27 on CNN and Sept. 10 on ABC.

However, Biden’s team set forth several conditions for the debates to take place, including the exclusion of the CPD. The Biden campaign is reportedly unhappy with the CPD’s handling of extensive crosstalk and interruptions during the 2020 debates between Biden and Trump.

Other conditions include no third-party candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and moderators having the authority to mute the candidates’ microphones if they speak out of turn.

Fahrenkopf expressed his surprise that the first debate will occur before most states have finalized their candidate listings on the ballots and well before the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions.

Regarding the first debate on June 27, Fahrenkopf highlighted that only seven states out of 50, along with the District of Columbia, will have completed their ballots by that date.
