FBI Director Christopher Wray has officially announced his resignation from his post on Wednesday.

“After extensive reflection, I have decided that the right decision for the bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and subsequently step down,” Wray stated on Wednesday in remarks provided by the FBI press office.

“My aim is to keep our mission at the forefront — the essential work you perform on behalf of the American populace every day,” Wray added. “In my opinion, this is the best way to prevent the Bureau from becoming further entangled in controversy, while reinforcing the values and principles that are crucial to our operations.”

In July, Wray unexpectedly questioned whether Trump had actually been shot in the ear by the 20-year-old failed assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania; implying that Trump was fabricating the incident.

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old rally attendee, was killed during the event, and two others sustained severe injuries due to Crooks’ gunfire, which narrowly missed Trump’s head, grazing his ear instead.

“It’s no surprise that the once-revered FBI has lost the trust of Americans!” Trump responded.

This follows Republican Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) criticizing Wray on Monday for what he termed “failed” leadership in the law enforcement agency, stating that it was time for Wray to depart.

In a letter to Wray that echoed many of President-elect Trump’s grievances about the FBI, Grassley condemned the agency’s search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, which Trump labeled as “invasive and unwarranted.”

Wray’s announcement comes as Trump’s nominee, Kash Patel, is set to take over the law enforcement agency in January.
