“The FBI is returning the President’s possessions that were taken during the unlawful raids,” stated White House Communications Director Steven Cheung in an interview with The Daily Wire. “We are retrieving the boxes today and loading them onto Air Force One.”
On August 8th, 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, as part of a criminal investigation into the handling of classified documents after his presidency.
“These are troubling times for our country, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently being raided and occupied by a large contingent of FBI agents,” Trump commented in a statement back then. “After cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my residence was unwarranted and inappropriate.”
The investigation primarily focused on the documents that Trump retained at Mar-a-Lago post his White House tenure, which reportedly included sensitive materials that officials had been attempting to recover since early 2021.
“They even broke into my safe!” Trump expressed at the time. “This is political targeting at the highest level!”
However, in July 2024, District Court Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case led by special counsel Jack Smith. She ruled the case invalid because “Smith’s appointment breaches the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” Cannon stated in an order that granted Trump’s dismissal request.
The judge noted that Smith’s “use of a permanent indefinite appropriation” contravened the Appropriations Clause of the Constitution. She emphasized that the court “need not address the appropriate remedy for that funding violation given the dismissal on Appointments Clause grounds.”
