FCC Commissioner Carr tells Newsmax: TikTok Ban Based on Behavior, Not Material

TikTok, with its ties to China through ByteDance, its parent company, continues to pose a significant threat to America’s national security. Brendan Carr, the senior Republican commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission, stated on Newsmax Sunday that the proposed legislation to ban TikTok in the United States is based on the company’s behavior rather than its content.

Carr explained that despite assurances that U.S. user data was not accessible in China, leaked material revealed otherwise. Data such as search history, keystrokes, biometrics, and location were available to personnel in Beijing who used it to surveil specific Americans.

Although there are arguments that the legislation infringes on First Amendment rights, Carr emphasized that the issue lies in TikTok’s conduct rather than the content shared on the app. He expressed confidence in the Senate passing the legislation due to senators raising concerns about TikTok’s links to China for years.

While TikTok’s CEO has pledged to secure data and maintain platform integrity, Carr stated that the company has lost credibility in Washington. He highlighted how the Chinese government has utilized TikTok for propaganda and manipulation during elections, a practice likely to continue in the future.

Carr emphasized that the core issue with TikTok is the data flowing to Beijing. The proposed legislation allows TikTok to divest from its Chinese ties, enabling millions of Americans to continue using the app.
