FCC’s Carr Tells Newsmax: Net Neutrality Equals Increased Government Control
According to Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr, a Republican, people are realizing that “net neutrality” is essentially “an Orwellian euphemism for more government control.”
Net neutrality is based on the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) should provide access to all content and applications without favoring or blocking any specific products or websites.
FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel confirmed to Reuters that the Federal Communications Commission will vote on April 25 to reinstate net neutrality rules and introduce new regulatory oversight of broadband internet that was revoked under former President Donald Trump.
Rosenworcel emphasized the essential nature of broadband as highlighted during the pandemic, stating that access to broadband is crucial for everyone to have a fair opportunity for success in the digital age.
However, Carr argues that net neutrality is not truly neutral. He cited concerns about the potential impact on low-income consumers due to restrictions on practices like “zero rating” and data-capped plans.
President Joe Biden has prioritized reinstating net neutrality rules, which were originally implemented under Democratic President Barack Obama. Democrats had faced challenges in implementing these rules due to lack of majority control of the FCC until October.
During Trump’s tenure, the FCC argued against net neutrality rules, claiming they hindered innovation and decreased network investment by ISPs. While Democrats disputed these claims, Carr criticized the FCC for looking at net neutrality from a backward perspective.
In discussing the origins of net neutrality, Carr highlighted that the concept emerged from Google in 2005 as a means to regulate competitors while benefiting big tech companies like Google and Apple in the present day.
