FCC’s Carr Tells Newsmax: Net Neutrality Will Lead to Increased Government Regulation

According to Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr, a Republican, people are realizing that “net neutrality” is merely a guise for increased government control.

Essentially, under the principle of net neutrality, internet service providers (ISPs) are expected to provide access to all content and applications without showing favoritism towards any particular products or websites.

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel has confirmed that the Federal Communications Commission plans to reinstate net neutrality rules on April 25 and assume new regulatory oversight of broadband internet, overturning measures put in place during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of broadband internet as an essential service, particularly highlighted during the pandemic when everyone needed fair access to succeed in the digital age.

Carr criticized the idea of net neutrality, pointing out that some of the provisions in the draft document could negatively impact low-income consumers by targeting practices like “zero rating” and data-capped plans.

This move to reinstate net neutrality rules has been a priority for President Joe Biden, who expressed his support through an executive order in July 2021, urging the FCC to reimplement rules that were initially adopted under President Barack Obama’s administration.

Despite facing obstacles before gaining majority control, Democrats on the FCC have persisted in their efforts to reinstate net neutrality rules, which were repealed during the Trump administration on the grounds of stifling innovation and discouraging investment by ISPs.

Carr criticized the FCC for its regressive approach, suggesting that the concept of net neutrality originated as a strategy by Google to influence government regulation in favor of their competitors.
