During his appearance, Fetterman (D-PA) discussed his visit to Mar-a-Lago for a meeting with Trump just before the inauguration, an event that received some criticism from his fellow Democrats.
Nonetheless, Fetterman remarked that Trump was “kind and cordial.”
“Overall, I believe it was a positive experience. He was — he was kind. He was cordial. It wasn’t staged; there were no attempts to create a moment for social media. It was truly just a conversation,” Fetterman reflected.
He went on to say he and his wife Giselle spoke with Trump for more than an hour, covering topics like food stamp benefits and seeking common ground.
“Overall, it was simply a straightforward conversation,” Fetterman explained.
Fetterman also shared his thoughts on Trump’s early actions as president.
“Honestly, I haven’t been surprised by anything happening now. He’s essentially doing what he campaigned on,” he expressed.
“He announced intentions to pardon the January 6 individuals. He is undoubtedly going to target border issues. There are many elements he campaigned on. I criticize a lot of it, and I don’t agree with everything, but it’s clear he ran on those points and has been upfront about it, saying, ‘I am your retribution,’ and following through on those promises,” Fetterman stated.
He added that he preferred not to “freak out” over the president’s actions but is “in the business of securing wins” for both his state and the country.
“I’m not that guy. I’m not going to take that stance as a Democrat. For me, there are aspects I will agree with and others I will disagree with, but I aim to find victories for Pennsylvania and the nation, and connecting with the president — that’s part of fulfilling my responsibilities,” he asserted.
“The View” co-host Ana Navarro questioned the senator about criticisms from fellow Democrats that he might be reinforcing the misleading impression that Trump is willing to collaborate with them.
“I recognize the importance of bipartisanship. I didn’t personally appreciate the optics of your visit to Mar-a-Lago,” she admitted — referring to it as Trump’s “palace” — before asking if he considers the meeting was a success.
“I believe it’s quite reasonable to have a discussion,” Fetterman responded to his detractors.
The senator further elaborated that he had been invited by Trump and saw this opportunity as part of his responsibility to work together as an elected official.
“I hope that perhaps you [viewers] are weary of the vitriol and animosity, and I desire to see more bipartisan efforts,” he expressed.
He continued to assert that contributing to “cheap hate online” was not advantageous.
“If negativity were truly effective, we would be experiencing a different situation. We would have been making those decisions with the new administration alongside then-Vice President Harris,” he concluded.
