Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has made headlines by announcing his intention to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Democrat senator to engage with Trump at his Florida residence.

“President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the Senator for all Pennsylvanians – not just Democrats in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed. “I’ve made it clear that no one serves as my gatekeeper. I am willing to meet and discuss matters with anyone if it benefits Pennsylvania and the country as a whole.”
He is the first sitting Democrat senator to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago since the latter’s victory in the 2024 election.
“I think that one, he’s the president, or he will be officially,” Fetterman added. “It’s reasonable for the president to have a conversation with anyone he wishes to invite. No one is my gatekeeper.”
Fetterman has positioned himself as a moderate, pro-Israel Democrat, indicating his support for some of Trump’s cabinet nominees, including Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state, and Representative Sean Duffy for secretary of transportation.
“I intend to vote for some of these nominees,” Fetterman asserted. “I am open to discussions with everyone, and I don’t see why this is controversial. I want to remind my fellow Democrats that this is how democracy operates.”
Despite criticism from several members of his party who denounce Trump as a “fascist” and dictator, Fetterman has openly praised the former president.
“It’s undeniable that Trump had an energy and a kind of fearlessness,” Fetterman noted. “Surviving an assassination attempt and having the presence of mind to respond with ‘fight, fight, fight!’ is a political talent. It’s undeniable.”
Moreover, Fetterman has advocated for President Joe Biden to pardon Trump, labeling the former president’s legal troubles as “bulls***.”
“The cases involving Trump and Hunter Biden are both bulls*** and deserving of pardons,” Fetterman commented, highlighting the political nature of the prosecutions. “Using the judiciary for partisan agendas undermines public trust in our institutions and deepens divisions.”
“It’s clear that the case against Hunter Biden was politically driven, and I believe the trial in New York concerning Trump was also political,” Fetterman further asserted. “These cases have collectively damaged America’s trust in such institutions, and we must prevent them from being misused against our political adversaries.”
The specifics of when and how the meeting between Trump and Fetterman will occur remain unclear, including whether this will take place before Trump’s inauguration on January 20th.
