Flags at the Capitol Lowered to Honor 13 Lives Lost in Afghanistan Withdrawal



House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has ordered the flags at the U.S. Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of the 13 American service members who died during an attack on an Afghanistan airport in 2021. This attack occurred just days before the U.S. completed its withdrawal from the country. Other politicians, including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, also issued statements to remember the two-year anniversary of the attack and express condolences to the families of the fallen heroes. Some politicians emphasized that the attack was a preventable tragedy.
