Florida Docs Case Prosecutor Receives Request from Rep. Jordan
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has sent a letter to a prosecutor on special counsel Jack Smith’s team, inviting him to interview with the panel. The committee is interested in inquiring about the prosecutor’s “unethical conduct” in the prosecution of Donald Trump in a classified documents case in Florida.
Specifically, Jordan and committee Republicans are focusing on the three White House meetings that prosecutor Jay Bratt attended before indicting the former president in South Florida.
The letter stated, “You have been closely involved with the investigation and prosecution of President Trump. You have engaged in improper actions and unethical conduct violating the Department’s duty to impartial justice.”
Republicans are concerned about the pattern of prosecutors involved in Trump trials taking meetings at the White House. They see a potential coordinated effort between the Department and the White House to investigate and prosecute political opponents of President Biden.
In a letter to Bratt, Jordan raised questions about the meetings having “a perception of improper coordination.”
Another issue for Jordan is a claim by an attorney for one of Trump’s co-defendants in the classified documents case. The attorney stated that Bratt discussed a potential judge appointment, which could create a conflict of interest.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has postponed the start of the classified documents case, with hearings scheduled for later this month to address legal issues raised by Trump’s defense team.
