The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced this week that 34-year-old Jeffrey O. Kennerk of Fort Lauderdale was apprehended on January 3rd while on a train, where a collection of assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, handguns, silencers, and a modified rifle that fired during his arrest were discovered at the Trenton Transit Center.
“This defendant is accused of taking a dangerous cache of weapons and ammunition through crowded transit hubs and onto a passenger train,” stated Attorney General Matthew Platkin. “He is believed to have abandoned a suitcase with several weapons and ammunition, including an assault rifle, in the Newark Penn Station concourse, putting the public at risk. If it weren’t for the excellent police work involved, we can only speculate where these weapons might have ended up.”
The situation unfolded when a New Jersey Transit Police officer noticed a black-and-white zebra-patterned suitcase left unattended near the Newark subway entrance.
Upon examination, investigators uncovered a handgun fitted with an 18-round magazine, a fully loaded AR-style magazine with .223 ammunition, and a plastic bag containing various types of 9mm and .223 ammunition.
Furthermore, in a secondary compartment of the suitcase, authorities reportedly discovered a loaded Zastava Arms AK-47-style rifle along with additional loaded magazines.
Prosecutors allege Kennerk had briefly abandoned the suitcase while he purchased an Amtrak ticket to Virginia, boarding the train in Newark before being intercepted by authorities at the subsequent stop in Trenton.
In the course of his arrest, more firearms and ammunition were seized, including an AR-15-style rifle disassembled into its upper and lower receivers, several extended magazines, various handguns, and a substantial supply of ammunition.
Additionally, authorities recovered another rifle chambered in .300 AAC Blackout, according to the Attorney General’s office.
“The officer pointed the suitcase muzzle to the ground, attempting to remove one of the handkerchiefs to secure it, at which point the firearm discharged without the officer touching the trigger, suggesting the gun was allegedly rigged,” the statement detailed.
Investigators also found four silencers and hollow point ammunition in both 9mm and .22 long rifle calibers.
Kennerk has been indicted on several second-degree offenses, which include unlawful possession of a weapon for illegal purposes, four counts of unlawful weapon possession, three counts of unlawful possession of assault firearms, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of firearm possession by a prohibited individual.
He additionally faces fourth-degree charges, encompassing two counts of unlawful possession of high-capacity magazines, and one count each of unlawful possession of hollow-point ammunition, unlawful possession of a silencer, endangerment, and causing or risking widespread injury or damage.
