Florida’s CFO Tells Newsmax: Taxpayer Dollars Would Not Cover Trump Fees
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has refuted reports from Newsmax suggesting that a bill proposed in the state senate would have allowed the use of taxpayer dollars for former President Donald Trump’s legal bills.
During an appearance on “National Report,” Patronis clarified that the funds to be used were not taxpayers’ dollars, but rather fees paid by candidates during qualifying. He emphasized the importance of addressing the use of the justice and court systems as political weapons against opponents of the incumbent and administration with the Biden’s.
The bill, SB 1740, which was filed by State Sen. Ileana Garcia, aimed to create a fund that would allow up to $5 million in grants to pay the legal fees of Trump or any other Florida resident running for president “subject to political discrimination.” However, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suggested that he would veto the bill, leading to its withdrawal.
