Former Attorney General Gonzales: DOJ Did Not Show Bias Against Trump or GOP

Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who served under former President George W. Bush, has written an opinion piece for the Washington Post, urging supporters of former President Donald Trump to “return to our roots as a nation of laws.” He criticized the Republicans’ attacks on the Department of Justice, calling them troubling and unfounded. Gonzales referred to Trump’s indictment on felony charges for attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election and the subsequent Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. He emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law and expressed concern about the growing distrust and anger against the DOJ. Gonzales called for a fair trial and the opportunity for the defendant to rebut the charges. He also called on the media to inform the public about the indictments and compare them with past decisions by the Justice Department, while urging political pundits to be honest and provide clear evidence if they believe Trump is being treated unfairly. Gonzales stressed the importance of supporting and preserving the rule of law in the face of increasing polarization and distrust in the justice system.
