The Republican (R-Utah), born to Haitian immigrants and recognized as the first Black Republican woman in Congress, “passed away peacefully” surrounded by her family in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” said Love’s family in a statement shared on X. “She was in her home, surrounded by family.”
“During a celebration of her life and amidst cherished memories, Mia gently departed from this world, as her words and vision have always uplifted us,” the family added. “We appreciate the outpouring of support, prayers, and condolences. We will share further details regarding funeral services and public celebrations of her legacy later.”
Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R-Utah) expressed that Love was a “true friend” and that her commitment to service inspired all who knew her.
Mia Love had been undergoing treatment for brain cancer and was participating in a clinical trial at Duke University’s brain tumor center with immunotherapy, but her daughter reported earlier this month that the former congresswoman was not responding to the treatment.
Her political journey began in 2003 when she won a seat on the city council in Saratoga Springs, located near Salt Lake City. She subsequently became the Mayor.
In 2012, she narrowly lost a congressional race against Democrat incumbent Jim Matheson in a district covering the Salt Lake City suburbs. She ran again in 2014, defeating Doug Owens by nearly 7,500 votes.
After her victory in 2014, she remarked that her win challenged critics who claimed a Black, Republican, Mormon woman could not succeed in a predominantly White Utah.
Leading up to the 2016 Presidential elections, many experts viewed Love as a rising star in the Republican party.
Earlier this month, an op-ed published in Deseret News highlighted Love’s hope for a less divisive America. In this piece, she expressed gratitude to those who prayed for her, as well as to her medical team.
She spoke about her parents coming to the U.S. with just $10 and their firm belief that hard work would lead to success. Love was raised with a strong belief in the American dream and in nurturing a love for her country, despite its flaws.
She called on politicians to lead with empathy and to communicate openly with their peers.
“Ultimately, I hope my life has made a meaningful impact for the nation I cherish and for those I hold dear,” Love expressed. “I desire that you will see the America I know in the future, hear my voice in the whispers of freedom, and feel my influence in the enduring flame of liberty’s principles. My fervent hope is that the America I have known is the America you strive to uphold.”
As the heartbreaking news spread, tributes poured in from politicians.
