Former Kentucky Attorney General Announces Candidacy to Succeed McConnell in Senate – One America News Network

With Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving leader of a Senate party in U.S. history, announcing his retirement, potential candidates are now stepping up to vie for his seat.

McConnell (R-Ky.) made his announcement on Thursday after experiencing two falls near the Senate Chamber earlier this month.
“Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have entrusted me with a seat in the Senate,” McConnell stated. “Every day between those elections, I’ve been honored by the faith they’ve placed in me to represent them here.
“Representing our state has been the greatest honor of my life. I will not seek this honor for an eighth time. This will be my final term in the Senate,” he concluded.
In the wake of McConnell’s announcement, former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron declared his candidacy for the vacated Senate seat.
Cameron had previously served as legal counsel to McConnell from 2015 to 2017, before the soon-to-retire 83-year-old senator faced accusations of turning against Trump following the 2020 election.
Though he ran for governor in 2023, Cameron lost to Democrat Andy Beshear.
He is notably recognized for overseeing the investigation into the 2020 case of Breonna Taylor.
Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old ER technician, was tragically shot and killed during a Louisville police raid aimed at apprehending her ex-boyfriend. Her family was later compensated $12 million.
As attorney general, Cameron eventually opted not to charge two officers whom social justice advocates accused of recklessly firing their weapons. However, he did prosecute a third officer after bullets from his firearm ricocheted into a neighboring apartment.
“Kentucky, it’s time for a new era of leadership in the U.S. Senate. Let’s make this happen,” Cameron shared in an X post.
Recently, Cameron also took to social media to express his congratulations to incoming FBI Director Kash Patel.
However, he is not without competition; other GOP representatives are also contemplating a run for McConnell’s vacant seat.
Representative Andy Barr (R-Ky.) announced on Thursday that he is “considering a Senate run because Kentucky deserves a senator who champions President Trump and the America First agenda.”
“I’ve committed to that every day in the House and would do so in the Senate,” Barr added. “The support I am receiving is encouraging, and my family and I will determine our course of action soon.”
Additionally, GOP Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) appears to be weighing his options, having posted a poll on X to gauge his supporters’ interest in a potential run — the response was overwhelmingly favorable.
