Former Maryland Governor Hogan states Senate GOP cannot rely on his vote

Former Maryland governor and current Senate candidate Larry Hogan has released a new ad urging Republicans not to rely on his vote if he wins in the traditionally Democrat-controlled state.

“I want to make it clear: Republicans cannot expect my vote in the Senate,” the two-term governor stated in the ad. “But neither can Democrats.”

Hogan recently won the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maryland’s primary election, securing over 60% of the vote among five Republican challengers.

“If any party wants my support, they must prioritize what is best for Maryland, not just their own political agenda,” he added. “This is the approach I took as governor, and it is the approach I will bring as a senator.”

The ad, titled “Right for Maryland,” is part of a $1 million advertising campaign that began last week. In his first ad, Hogan pledged to support legislation that would enshrine Roe v. Wade into federal law.

Hogan told The New York Times, “I advocate for reinstating Roe as the law of the land. I will continue to defend women’s rights to make their own reproductive choices, as I did during my eight years as governor.”

While Hogan has been successful in winning gubernatorial elections in Democrat-friendly Maryland, his criticism of former President Donald Trump has made him less popular among traditional conservatives.

In a March interview with MSNBC, Hogan shared that Trump’s comments on the Senate’s unsuccessful border bill motivated him to enter the Maryland Senate race.

In February, Hogan announced his candidacy for the Senate in Maryland. He will be competing against Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who won the Democratic nomination. Maryland has not elected a Republican senator since 1980.
