With the recent exit of Republican Jon Husted from the U.S. Senate, Governor Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) announced at a press conference that Tressel, at 72 years old, will fill the vacancy left by Husted for the remaining two years of his term.
“He possesses the necessary skills. He meets the criteria I discussed. He understands Ohio,” DeWine stated. “I have faith in Jim Tressel’s judgment. He is a natural leader.”
Previously, Tressel had hinted at a possible Senate campaign following Republican Rob Portman’s retirement in 2021. However, he now has a more promising opportunity in the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial race, especially with DeWine being term-limited.
Beyond securing the 2002 national championship where Ohio State triumphed over the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl and concluded a perfect 14-0 season, Tressel led the Buckeyes to seven Big Ten championships and participated in two additional title games under the Bowl Championship Series.
Nonetheless, Tressel resigned before the 2011 season after acknowledging awareness of NCAA violations involving some players who had improperly traded jerseys and other merchandise for free tattoos from a Columbus shop.
The Justice Department and FBI uncovered the situation that became known as “Tattoogate” during an investigation of Edward Rife, the owner of Fine Line Ink Tattoos and Piercings, who was laundering drug money through his business.
Tressel’s nomination for the lieutenant governor position must receive approval from the Ohio state House and Senate. Other notable contenders for their party’s gubernatorial nomination include former 2024 GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, and state Treasurer Robert Sprague.
