On Sunday, the Carter Center confirmed that the former president died at his residence, surrounded by loved ones in Plains, Georgia.

Carter was the first U.S. president to celebrate a centennial birthday.

Since February 2023, he had been receiving hospice care at his home, where he lived with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who was 77. The former first lady passed away on November 19th, 2023.

In recognition of Carter’s 100th birthday in October 2024, President Biden made a heartfelt birthday message aired on CBS News, stating, “Mr. President, you’ve consistently been a moral guide for our nation and the globe. I realized this as a young senator, which led me to support you early on. You represent courage, conviction, compassion, and are, most importantly, a cherished friend to Jill, me, and our family.”

Carter won the presidency in 1976 by defeating Republican President Gerald Ford, coming into power in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. However, he was unable to resolve the 444-day crisis involving American hostages in Iran, which factored into his loss to Ronald Reagan during the 1980 election, serving only one term.

In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in global human rights advocacy.

Post-presidency, Carter, along with Rosalynn and his Atlanta-based organization, focused on fighting poverty and homelessness, negotiating with oppressive regimes, monitoring elections in volatile areas, addressing health crises, and promoting public health initiatives in developing countries over four decades.

In April 2021, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid a visit to the Carters at their home in Plains, as the former presidential couple could not attend the inauguration of the 46th president.
