Marine Le Pen, the right-wing leader in France, was sentenced to a five-year prohibition from holding political office alongside a four-year prison sentence due to embezzlement charges.

Le Pen was poised to lead in the upcoming elections before her sentencing, as the court found her and several associates in the National Rally Party guilty of misappropriating €4.9 million intended for the European Parliament.

Additionally, twenty other members of the National Rally Party faced similar charges, accused of diverting European Parliament funds for party employee salaries.

In total, nine European Parliament members and twelve assistants were convicted.

Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis remarked that Le Pen’s actions represented a “serious and lasting violation of the principles of democratic life in Europe, particularly in France,” noting that her disqualification from office was a response to “democratic public unrest.”

Le Pen quickly denounced the ruling, labeling it a “politically motivated decision.”

“The judge has made it abundantly clear that enforcing the temporary ban on my candidacy undermines my appeal and effectively stops me from seeking election,” she stated, referring to the presidential race.

“Countless French citizens are furious, profoundly disturbed by the sight of judges in France—now considered the cradle of human rights—employing tactics usually associated with authoritarian regimes,” she continued.

“From the outset of this trial, I sensed bias from the court. I never anticipated the judges would act to undermine our democratic process and so severely interfere with the voice of the French people. Let’s be clear: I may be silenced, but it is the voice of millions of French citizens that has been stifled.” Le Pen added, “I will explore every possible avenue for recourse available to me.”

Meanwhile, Elon Musk took to X to comment on the situation, stating that “when radical leftists fail to win through democratic means, they weaponize the legal system to imprison their adversaries.”

“This has become their standard approach globally,” he further elaborated.

In addition, former President Donald Trump reacted to the news when asked by a reporter, drawing parallels between Le Pen’s situation and corruption in Washington, D.C.

“This is significant. She has been barred from running for President despite being the leading candidate. It bears resemblance to our own country,” he commented.
