Gallup Poll Results Show Biden as Least Popular President in Recorded History
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has labeled President Joe Biden as the “worst president in history,” and recent polling data supports this claim.
According to the latest Gallup Poll results released over the weekend, Biden has the lowest approval ratings of any president in the 70-year history of this data, surpassing previous low ratings held by Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Richard Nixon.
“With approximately six months left before Election Day, Biden finds himself in a less favorable position than any previous incumbent, presenting a tougher challenge for his reelection,” Jeffrey Jones of Gallup noted in his analysis.
The Gallup poll examined the historical 13th quarter approval ratings (first quarter of the first four-year term) of each presidency since 1956, revealing that Biden’s average approval rating of 38.7% is the lowest among all first terms.
From a broader historical perspective, Jones added, “Biden’s most recent quarterly average ranks 277th out of 314 presidential quarters in Gallup records dating back to 1945, placing it in the bottom 12% of all presidential quarters.”
The rankings of the worst 13th quarter first-term presidential approval rating averages are as follows:
- Biden 38.7%
- George H.W. Bush 41.8%
- Obama 45.9%
- Trump 46.8%
- Carter 47.7%
- George W. Bush 51%
- Bill Clinton 53.0%
- Nixon 53.7%
- Reagan 54.5%
- Dwight Eisenhower 73.2%
Gallup did not analyze data prior to the Eisenhower administration.
Among the four presidents listed above with sub-50% majority approval, only Obama managed to win reelection for a second term.
Approval ratings from the poll show that only 2% of Republicans approve of Biden’s performance, along with 33% of independents. This leaves Biden relying heavily on Democratic voters for his reelection bid, as per the poll results.
The Gallup approval rating data is based on a poll conducted among 1,001 Americans from April 1-22, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
