Gallup Poll: Trump and Biden Share Similar Favorability Ratings
According to a new Gallup poll, former President Donald Trump has a slightly higher favorability rating among U.S. adults than President Joe Biden.
Trump, who is the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has a 42% favorable rating, as reported by Gallup. This is slightly lower than his 45% favorability in October 2020, just before the presidential election.
Conversely, Biden is viewed favorably by 41% of U.S. adults, which is an eight percentage point drop from his 49% rating in October 2020. Biden’s favorability has fallen by nearly 18 points from his peak of 59% in January 2021.
Biden’s favorable rating has decreased among nearly all major subgroups of society, particularly among young adults and people of color.
Biden’s favorability varies among different demographic groups, with his rating highest among older adults (47%) and lowest among those aged 18 to 34 (30%). His favorability among people of color is down 16 points to 48% compared to October 2020.
Furthermore, since 2020, Biden has lost more support from Democrats (down 13 points to 82%) than among independents (down nine points to 38%). In contrast, Trump’s support among people of color has increased, almost compensating for his nine-point decrease in favorability among white adults.
In terms of image, Trump is viewed more favorably among men, young adults, white adults, non-college graduates, and Republicans. On the other hand, Biden is seen better by women, older Americans, people of color, college graduates, and Democrats. Middle-aged adults and independents currently have similar views of Biden and Trump.
The poll also found that independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is viewed favorably by over half of adults across various subgroups.
Among Republicans, Trump is viewed best (at 79% favorable, 19% unfavorable), followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (63%, 24%) and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (44%, 24%). However, Haley’s unfavorable rating is 34%, compared to DeSantis’ 52%.
In addition, more Americans have no opinion of Haley (34%) compared to DeSantis (16%) in a poll conducted before Haley’s town hall in New Hampshire, where she failed to mention slavery as a cause of the U.S. Civil War.
Haley later clarified that the Civil War “of course” was “about slavery” and said her previous night’s comments came after a question by one of the “Democrat plants.”
The latest Gallup poll was conducted from Dec. 1-20 among 1,013 U.S. adults, regardless of their plans to vote in November’s election.
